Artist/music producer born in Nicosia, based in Berlin. Papista’s current work engages in developing and queering, politically induced, reinvented versions of history. She explores the way in which the manifestation of contemporary Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Balkan folklore and computerised, punk music, can act as subversive counterpoints to homogeneous, nationalist narratives. Her new album Fucklore, delves into the pockets of anarchy, mourning and exuberance, she finds in traditional styles, sounds and ceremonies surviving on the edge between the existentially worn-out, and ferociously alive. It touches on topics such as the murders of migrant women in Cyprus, micro histories that deviate from grand narratives and the fight against nationalism.
