Ploy

Ploy, the pseudonym of South London based artist Sam Smith, emerged onto the scene in 2016 with his debut release, ‘Sala One Five’ on the renowned Hessle Audio label. This was expertly followed up by a slew of EP’s finding residence on Batu’s Timedance imprint, the faction who collectively carved out a unique sound in a shockingly short space of time, grounded in UK bassbin principles yet pushing that prism in wild, crooked new ways that have become something of a signature aesthetic. A constant urge to push boundaries led him to his debut album on the renowned L.I.E.S. Records, a home for the raw and grittiness that shows in his most personal work. The raving reviews and end of year lists show the world catching on to his unique skill set as a producer. His own label Deaf Test expertly explores his spectrum of sounds with a playful approach whilst keeping room for experimentation and collaboration. Ploy’s unique sound has a place among modern electronic music’s most innovative, receiving remix treatment from the likes of Beatrice Dillon and Peder Mannerfelt. His knack for pushing out well received hits has been recognized by best track of the year listings on many publications such as Crack Magazine, The Guardian, FACT Magazine, Mixmag, Dummy Mag, DJ Mag and more. As well as regularly performing in top venues around the world and having already mixed an Electronic Explorations podcast, he has held down multiple NTS shows and a week-long residency on Rinse FM. Exploring the spectrum of sounds and influences he released his debut album on L.I.E.S. Records and was met with raving reviews and end of year album lists. The launch of Deaf Test in late 2021 allows him to explore the wider influences and musical landscapes out there that fit with his unique approach to music and production.
