Delving into electronic music and its sub-genres from his hometown of The Rower in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland over a decade ago, Eddie Galavan’s journey has taken him from the depths of the country to London, Berlin, Amsterdam and Nijmegan in recent years.
Growing up in the South East of Ireland, Eddie’s taste in music spanned disco, italo, synthwave, post-punk, rock and indie. It wasn’t long before electronica snuck into Eddie’s vinyl collection, evolving into the sounds of house, techno, acid and electro, later becoming the mainstay of Eddie’s sonic palette today.
Curious to blend these genres, Eddie began DJing aged 16 and filled his record bag with “everything and anything” from BPM Records based in Waterford City. In the shop itself, Eddie met like-minded DJs and landed his first gig at The Cellar in nearby town New Ross. The bar acted as a springboard for Eddie to play monthly and build his confidence as a selector, soon leading to open-slot nights at The Zoo club in Kilkenny.
Procuring gigs around Waterford from the mid-00s, Eddie took many influence from the styles of Andrew Weatherall, Dj Harvey, DJ Stingray, Drexciya, and Aphex Twin. In 2010, Eddie was one of the founding members of the DIY underground event collective ‘Twin Peakings’ where he DJ’d and promoted parties with a group of like minded friends before the collective parted ways in 2018.
In the same year, Eddie launched his label and event series Seems Legit! and hosted parties in Central Arts, Waterford. After the venue closed down, Eddie moved to Project, Waterford where Seems Legit! welcomed John Heckle, Prosumer, Cailín, Ikeaboy, David Vunk, Lee Holman, Tr One and DJ Wool to soundtrack the intimate space. Since Covid-19 struck, however, the series went on a hiatus. Eddie is now rescheduling dates which where scheduled form pre covid times.
Keen to support local talent, Seems Legit! debuted its first release in 2019 from Waterford-based producer Ikeaboy with an EP titled ‘Syncardia’. The imprint then branched into an experimental sub-label called ‘Off The Beaten Track’ with its first release ‘Parastic’ dropping another Waterford native Akari.
Having played throughout Ireland since the early 00's, Eddie has DJ’d further afield and into the booths of Red Light Radio in Amsterdam, HÖR in Berlin and Open Source Radio in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, Mission, London, Pattern, Berlin. With bookings in London’s Ninety One venue, Berlin’s Chalet Club and Dublin’s Tengu have also played a significant part in Eddie’s trajectory, introducing him to lineups with Altern8, The Extaltics, John Heckle, Mark Forshaw, Local Suicide and many more.
