Holden Cumfield

Nikita Alexander Trachtenberg Zhukovskiy aka Holden Cumfield is a Magister of Media Arts, Kwia resident, and multimedia/transmedia artist who works on the intersection of queer theory and digital arts. Born in a mixed race family in Moscow, he immigrated to Europe after the introduction of 'gay propaganda law' in 2013, and is now based in Berlin, Germany where he creates objects, sculptures, images, sound art and installations, that address issues of identity politics, subjectivity of perception, the meaning of action and safety in public and private spaces, and the notion of borders between them. Inspired by synaesthesia, and exploring in his work methods of deconstruction and reconfiguration of media and space, while experimenting with video and sound media archives through analogue vs digital feedback loops, he also collects and composes experimental and ambient records since early teenage years. Holden Cumfield emerged as an electroacoustic ambient music project in 2019 during his studio practice work on the sound sculpture series 'Formations' at the Sound Art Lab of Bildende und Mediale Kunst University in Vienna, where it was presented for the first time, followed by a 3 room solo exhibition and live performance event at the GlogauAir main project space. The new iteration of this project was exhibited during the Berlin Art Week in September 2022 at the Marienburg Power Grid Control Room. His series of glass works ‘h3rb5’ that exist in both real and virtual spaces is part of a permanent art installation at the deep listening ambient sound bar Kwia.
